Description: Regional Strategies are in place for eight areas of regional NSW and have been prepared in partnership with state and local government, communities and business. The Regional Strategies set a clear direction for these rapidly growing regions over the longer term. This dataset shows Far North Coast Regionally Significant Farmland. The Northern Rivers Farmland Protection Project aimed to support agriculture and agricultural lands in the Richmond, Tweed and Brunswick river catchments by protecting the land from the encroachment of urban and rural residential development. The Project was coordinated by the former Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (part of which is now the Department of Planning) in partnership with the Department of Primary Industries. It implemented Action 2.1.1 of the Northern Rivers Catchment Blueprint. The Section 117 Direction provides an implementation mechanism for the Farmland Protection Project's outcomes. The Direction prevents state and regionally significant farmland being rezoned for urban or rural residential use, except under limited circumstances. It also sets out processes for avoiding land use conflict between rural uses and residential uses. The Section 117 Direction aims to: · ensure that the best agricultural land will be available for current and future generations to grow food and fibre; · provide more certainty on the status of the best agricultural land, thereby assisting councils with their local strategic settlement planning; and · reduce land use conflict arising between agricultural use and non-agricultural use of farmland as caused by urban encroachment into farming areas. The Section 117 Direction shows three types of important agricultural lands, as identified by the Farmland Protection Project. These lands are mapped as: · State significant farmland · Regionally significant farmland · Significant non-contiguous farmland The Direction replaces the Minister's Direction entitled "Interim Protection for Farmland of State and Regional Significance on the NSW Far North Coast" made on 12 January 2004. The Direction applies to: Ballina Shire Council Byron Shire Council Kyogle Shire Council Lismore City Council Richmond Valley Council Tweed Shire Council N.B. The data is not guaranteed to be free from error or omission. The set of four paper maps titled "Northern Rivers Farmland Protection Project, Final Map 2005 (Section 117(2) Direction)" issued by the Minister for Planning on 30 September 2005 are the definitive source for the significant farmland protection boundaries.
